When working with tools, there’s nothing more frustrating than a tiny screw bouncing off the workbench and disappearing into a dark corner. That’s why many tool manufacturers sell magnetic-tipped screwdrivers. While these are wonderful tools, it doesn’t mean you need to go running off to the store for a new set. By using a simple magnetizer/demagnetizer, you can make the regular old screwdrivers you already own magnetic or nonmagnetic any time you’d like.
How Magnetizers Work
Before diving into how these handy gadgets operate, we first need to understand a concept called the magnetic moment. The magnetic moment is essentially an object’s tendency to align with a magnetic field. When exposed to a magnetic field, the electrons in an object—like a screwdriver—tend to align parallel to the magnetic field’s lines surrounding them. Consequently, the object becomes magnetic—at least temporarily.
When a screwdriver or other tool is passed through the magnetizer multiple times, the tool’s magnetic moments are manipulated. All of the electrons in the tool are aligned, creating a new magnetic field. As a result, the screwdriver will be able to hold on to those pesky little screws at the workbench.
It should be noted that this magnetic field is temporary. Because the tool is only paramagnetic—meaning it will respond to a magnetic field—it will not hold the magnetic field forever. In time, you’ll need to run it through the magnetizer again.

How Demagnetizers Work
The demagnetizer is just as simple. Inside the demagnetizer, the screwdriver is exposed to an opposite magnetic field, but with a twist. Notice the stepped layout in the demagnetizer? This is designed to create an irregular magnetic field that randomly spins the magnetic moments. The result: Any magnetic field the tool exhibits will quickly disappear.

Not all demagnetizers are handheld! Some are electrically powered and too big for one person to lift. While they operate on the same principles as the much smaller versions, these are often large tunnels over a conveyor belt carrying products to be demagnetized.
For example, some products become slightly magnetized during the manufacturing process. By passing them through a demagnetizer, manufacturers can remove any magnetic fields before shipping their products.
